help us finish the game

WE'RE LOOKING FOR INDIVIDUAL CONTRIBUTORS TO HELP US FINISH THE GAME. ARTISTS, LEVEL DESIGNERS, sound designers, AND MORE.

Nighttime Runners was concepted in the winter of '22, when James had an idea for a multiplayer game that was inclusive, casually competitive, and full of social features. Shortly thereafter a design document was put together, and then it was pitched to his fellow students at CG Spectrum. From there, work began on this ambitious multiplayer project. Every game development cycle has it's ups and downs; what it takes is tenacity, and a commitment to your fellow  developers to see it through. We've done that over the past 2.5 years, and now it's time to ask for help.

This is where you come in. We're asking individual Contributors to provide assets or hourly rated work via a deferred payback model. When we generate enough revenue, you get paid, before any of the core team. You're not dedicating yourself to a years long project, you're coming in to create assets and help us polish the experience. To date, we've received no funding, and the core team will not be taking any payment until all Contributors are paid back in full. The game will be free to play, with monetization covering custom skins for characters, gear, and equipment, and other cosmetics.

If things go very well, we're looking to pay bonuses to those who have Contributed before the release date. If we earn 2X the owed work in post expense revenue, we will provide a 25% bonus on your value of work completed, based on total monetary value of work completed of all individual contributors, compared to revenue. If we hit 3X, another 25% will be paid out. All revenue earned and expenses will be openly visible to owed contributors.

As a developer myself, and being fully aware of how a deferred payment model creates risk for the Contributor, I am not only promising to be transparent, but will have a contract between any Contributors and Voidea Games LLC. This contract covers how and when payback will occur, and also covers financial transparency between Voidea Games LLC and any owed Contributors. This will be signed before any tasks are started or asked for from any Contributor. - James

How it will work

Voidea Games, and more importantly, the 2.5 year in development project, Nighttime Runners, is needing Contributors to finish development. We're an indie studio using a deferred payback system. Everyone will log approved work (per asset or hourly), including Voidea Games LLC, which will be kept track of in a Owed Contributor visible sheet, and if the game generates revenue, you get paid based on what you're owed. Why deferred payment? We’re a fully independent two-person team with no external funding. We make nothing, until after you get paid back. We believe in transparency, and all contributors will be paid at the same time, at the same intervals. This isn’t an employment offer, but it is a formal, contract-backed agreement that guarantees payment for approved work if the game earns revenue. This will be backed by a signed contract between the Contributor and Voidea Games LLC.

Breakdown

  • Paid once the game earns revenue, over costs to operate

  • Revenue covers expenses first, then 80% goes to the Owed Contributors

  • 20% is reserved to cover floating expenses and new business costs

  • First $1K owed per Contributor is prioritized

  • Remaining funds are paid out proportionally each month

  • Complete transparency to Owed Contributors of ongoing costs

Everyone is paid the same rate by role, and it's all tracked transparently in a shared sheet available to Owed Contributors.

How To Apply

Fill out the following form to apply. This is not a job application. You're applying to be able to contribute to the game. We're asking for a few pieces of information, as well as portfolio work. Please have at least 1 year of experience in your area of expertise. Thank you.

CURRENT DEVELOPMENT PROGRESS

We have completed the majority of major features, and the game is in a playable state. We have run play tests before, over a year ago, and are looking to start again since our switch to dedicated servers. We're using placeholder art to convey atmosphere that ties into gameplay. You're jumping in at the point where we'll start to build a community, witness our first marketing push, and see the polish applied.

When will the game release

This depends on the amount of Contributors we can get. The more we have, the faster things can get done. Our bottleneck would be programming regardless, and we foresee about 3 months of work left there.

tasks to complete before early access release

This button links to a publicly available Trello board, tracking what we have left before we can release the game in Early Access.
